The Only Mortal in Heaven, Episode 2: She Came Back After Dark

The loop: a candle flickers, a curtain sways, and Asmodea slides out of the dark in red straps. That is the few seconds you replay. The episode is everything that builds to it. William wakes in the Citadel of Aeris, a city split between angels and demons, and learns his two guardians watched the car hit him and could not stop it. Then the angel touches his arm and her hand starts to glow. One touch. So what is he? 'Food.'

Both guardians get sent out so the human can rest. The angel swears she will come back and explain it all. The demoness only smiles, as if to say we will see. Alone, William turns it over: if angels and demons are real, where does that leave him? Night falls, the flame bends, the fabric pulls aside, and Asmodea is in his room with a wicked grin. 'Quiet, William. You'll like it.' Episode 2 of The Only Mortal in Heaven ends where the heat begins.
